In a time of uncertainty, netball continues to band together with Suncorp Super Netball’s Jamaican players set to spend the foreseeable future together in Western Australia.
Adelaide Thunderbirds defender Shamera Sterling, Melbourne Vixens defender Kadie-Ann Dehaney and Collingwood Magpies defender Jodi-Ann Ward will be hosted by West Coast Fever shooter Jhaniele Fowler in Perth.
The four athletes play alongside one another at an international level for the Jamaican team, the Sunshine Girls.
The decision comes off the back of Thunderbirds being unable to secure travel plans for Shamera to return home due to the national border closure.
With the health and wellbeing of the athletes at the forefront of everyone’s mind, all four clubs moved quickly to organise the players’ arrival on WA soil before the interstate travel ban came into effect.
Netball SA CEO Bronwyn Klei said the Jamaican players uniting was a reflection of how important it is to support each other through such uncertain times.
“We’re devastated for Shammy that she’s unable to return home to Jamaica, but we’re so pleased she will be able to find comfort in staying with Jhanielle, Kadie-Ann and Jodi-Ann,” Klei said.
“If this pandemic has taught us anything it’s the value of those around us to lift us up and help us get through such challenging times.
“Netball SA will continue to support Shamera and all our athletes to ensure they continue to take care of their physical and mental wellbeing.”
This decision follows the Super Netball League Commission’s announcement that the 2020 season will be deferred and will not commence prior to 30 June.
