Both teams opened the match with hunger following their unexpected victories in Round 1 and it was goal-for-goal during most of the first quarter.
The NSW Swifts managed to pull ahead and lead by three goals at the first break, 14 to 11.
The home team managed to extend their lead to six goals during the second quarter which prompted an Adelaide Thunderbirds line-up shuffle halfway through the quarter in an attempt to stem the NSW Swifts goal flow.
Only Chelsea Pitman remained in her original starting position, and Kate Shimmin, Hannah Petty and Cody Lange entered the match. Despite the wholesale changes, NSW Swifts continued to pile on the goals and ran out 21 to 10 goal winners of the second quarter.
More changes to begin the second half saw a more settled Adelaide Thunderbirds claw back three goals in the start of the third quarter, however, the NSW Swifts responded and continued their dominant defensive display across the entire court.
Despite a tighter contest in the second half, NSW Swifts claimed all four bonus points, winning the third and fourth quarters by one and three goals respectively.
Following the match, Tania Obst, Head Coach, Adelaide Thunderbirds said the team was hurt by inaccurate disposal and skill execution.
“We were hesitant to release the ball today and didn’t read the space well,” said Tania.
“Credit to the Swifts who put us under pressure and created doubt in our mind.
“We allowed them to open us up defensively to go down 11 goals in one quarter.
“We then changed up what we were doing to at least be in the contest in the second half,” said Tania.
The Adelaide Thunderbirds will be looking to bounce back against Melbourne Vixens at home next Saturday in Round 3 of Suncorp Super Netball.
