Adelaide Thunderbirds star defender Latanya Wilson has been crowned Club Champion for the first time after an exceptional year in the pink dress.
The 23-year-old from Kingston, Jamaica was acknowledged at the club’s Awards Night on Sunday, August 4 as the side continued its back-to-back premiership celebrations.
The star defender took her game to a new level in 2024, shining across all three defensive positions as she solidified her place amongst the best defenders in the world.
In her fourth season in pink, Wilson finished the 2024 season with an incredible 1094 Nissan Net points, 89 deflections, 46 intercepts and 11 rebounds.
Wilson was awarded two Player of the Match accolades in Rounds 7 and 10 along with three fan-voted MVPs.
Also celebrated on the night was Georgie Horjus after the playing group named the South Australian star as their Players Player for 2024 on the back of a remarkable season in pink.
The 22-year-old from Kangaroo Island once again proved why she is one of the best attackers in the league, finishing the season with four Player of the Match awards and five fan-voted MVPs.
Horjus also led the side in goal assists with 230 and centre pass receives recording 248.
She was an integral part of the side’s grand final victory delivering across WA/GA with 81.5 Nissan Net Points, 22 feeds, 12 goal assists and 7 goals.
On the back of a dominant 2023/24 season, Horjus also earned her first Australian Origin Diamonds Squad selection alongside Matilda Garrett and Lucy Austin, who was selected as an invitee.
In just her fourth season with the club, Horjus has made claim to two SSN Premierships, solidifying herself as one of the best midcourters in the league.
In her first season in the Thunderbirds’ leadership group, South Australian Tayla Williams was the recipient of the club’s Spirit Award for 2024.
The two-time premiership player was voted into the team’s leadership group for the first time in her career this season, alongside Shamera Humphrey-Sterling and captain Hannah Petty.
The Spirit Award is given to the player who best represents the team’s values and is a testament to Williams’ impact on the playing group both on and off the court.
Williams had a dominant season in 2024, recording an impressive 1064 Nissan Net Points, 39 deflections and 12 intercepts.
The 23-year-old from the Balaklava region in the State’s Mid North had stand out performances in Round’s 4 and 5, taking out the Player of the Match Award in both games.
Superstar Shamera Sterling-Humphrey was also recognised at the Awards Night as she was named Player of the Finals after shining on the big stage.
In her side’s Major Semi-Final victory, Sterling-Humphrey recorded an incredible 133.5 Nissan Net Points to go with 14 gains, 5 intercepts and 8 rebounds.
In the big dance, she finished with 56 Nissan Net Points, 3 gains, 3 intercepts and 7 deflections.
