The Adelaide Thunderbirds have revealed their 2024 leadership group, with premiership captain Hannah Petty set to lead her side again for a fifth-consecutive season.
Petty will be joined again by international star Shamera Sterling-Humphrey, and fellow South Australian Tayla Williams who has been named for the first time.
Petty and Sterling-Humphrey led the Thunderbirds to the club’s first premiership in 10 years last season, while Williams was instrumental through the side’s midcourt.
Head coach Tania Obst said all three athletes offer unique yet complementary leadership styles.
“Hannah has led this club for five seasons now, having been a Thunderbird for nine, and is an instrumental part of the club’s recent success,” Obst said.
“She became a premiership captain in 2023 and continues to draw the respect of her teammates, coaches and the club’s staff.
“Shamera stepped up in 2023 and was a key driver in our history-making season, both on and off the court.
“Her combination with fellow Jamaican Latanya Wilson and Australian Diamond Matilda Garrett continues to be the backbone of our team.
“I’m excited and proud to see Tayla step into a leadership role – she has been a key part of our midcourt since she debuted in 2020 and has emerged as a leader amongst the group.”
“All three bring something different and together I have full confidence in their ability to drive our side to success in 2024.
In addition, for the first time, the club has named two emerging leaders, Matilda Garrett and Georgie Horjus.
“Tilly and Georgie’s developing leadership skills have been recognised through the pre-season and we are eager to continue that development through the season and beyond,” Obst said.
The side will begin their 2024 campaign on Saturday, April 13 at their new home, the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, as they host the Queensland Firebirds.
