The Adelaide Thunderbirds have named their new captains for 2026, with star duo Georgie Horjus and Shamera Sterling-Humphrey to lead the club for the first time.
South Australian Horjus will enter her seventh season with her home club in 2026, while Jamaican Sterling-Humphrey will reach season eight in pink.
They share an impressive list of accolades, including dual premierships for the Thunderbirds and being among the only four athletes to take out the Super Netball MVP award since 2017.
The pair will co-captain the club as it celebrates 30 years of rich history in 2026, starting with Heritage Round for their season opener on March 14.
Horjus hails from Parndana on Kangaroo Island, a town of approximately 200 people, and made her way through the Netball SA Pathway before debuting as Thunderbird #100 in 2020.
After becoming a Club Champion at just 19 years of age in 2021, she joined the Thunderbirds’ leadership group in 2024 and has since become an Australian Diamond.
Jamaican international Sterling-Humphrey joined the Thunderbirds in 2019 and quickly became a fan favourite and leader in the side’s defensive unit.
The two-time Club Champion has been a part of the club’s leadership group since 2023 and captained the Jamaican national team in 2025.
Tayla Williams and Matilda Garrett complete the leadership group as vice-captains for 2026, marking their third year within the group.
Head coach Tania Obst said the leadership group had been selected following a comprehensive process involving players and staff.
“This leadership structure reflects the strengths, influence, and leadership behaviours we value and strive for within our environment,” Obst said.
“Our two captains bring complementary qualities that will help drive standards, connection, and performance throughout the season.
“Including our vice captains, this leadership group will anchor the team’s culture, accountability, and competitive identity as preparations continue for the 2026 season.”
Horjus and Sterling-Humphrey will run out in front of the club’s fanbase for the first time as co-captains at the side’s season opener on March 14.
The side travelled to Ballarat over the weekend for their first pre-season hit outs and secured consecutive wins over the NSW Swifts and Melbourne Vixens.
