The Adelaide Thunderbirds are thrilled to announce Australian Olympian Jessica Stenson (née Trengove) as the club’s inaugural #1 ticket holder for the 2021 season.
An icon for women’s sport across the country, Jess represented Australia at the 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in the marathon.
As a proud South Australian, she grew up following the Thunderbirds and says her decision to become the number one ticket holder was tapping into a childhood dream.
“My main connection to the club is that I would have to have been one of the Thunderbirds’ number one fans as a school girl,” Jess said.
“I still have newspaper clippings and tickets from the T-Birds and Australian games that I attended as a junior, along with photos of my cheesy grin beside idols, such as Peter Scholtz, Alex Hodge, Laura Von Bertouch and Karthryn Harby-Williams at netball clinics and games.”
Jess attended her first match as #1 ticket holder on Sunday as the Thunderbirds hosted the Sunshine Coast Lightning at Netball SA Stadium for the league’s Indigenous Round.
“It’s a great honour to become the #1 ticket holder for the Adelaide Thunderbirds and I’m really looking forward to sharing the game day experience with my husband and toddler Billy,” Jess said.
“Netball was my favourite sport throughout my junior and teenage years in Naracoorte and then as a boarder in Adelaide.
“Whenever I hear whistles and netball sneakers screeching, I have flashbacks to the excitement and anticipation I felt when collecting my bib (usually C) for game day.
“Watching others play reminds of the passion, adrenaline, focus and camaraderie I experienced during country carnivals, netball camps, holiday clinics and my seasons at Kybybolite, Cougars and Contax.”
