You’ve had a stellar netball career playing both locally and internationally, what have been some of the biggest learnings from your experience in netball? How have they helped shape you as a player and a person?
My biggest learnings would be finding what worked best for me. For myself to be able to become the best athlete performance-wise, as well as learning to do it in a team environment.
Knowing when putting the team first is the utmost importance and then at other times, putting myself first for the benefit of the team. It is a tough balance and something that is critical to growth.
What do you love most about using your experience to mentor other players both in the SSN and the broader community?
I would love to walk away from the game knowing I left it in a better spot than when I first started and that also goes for my teammates around me. Any opportunity to get out into the broader community to mentor and help grow our game is a privilege because of the position I am in.
What was a highlight of your experience as an Adelaide Thunderbirds co-captain in 2019?
I guess a highlight first and foremost is having the honour of becoming co-caption of such an amazing club.
I am not going to lie and say it was easy and business-as-usual, but it forced me to add depth to my leadership.
I was blessed to have such a good relationship with my co-captain Layla. We were always open and honest with each other. We had never been in a co-leadership position before so we both found a formula for it to work effectively and efficiently.
You’ve been living in Adelaide for about four years now and are no doubt feeling more settled here; what makes Adelaide feel like home now?
It is a combination of things that has made Adelaide home. The friendships I have outside of netball are genuine friends I will have for life, my husband is from here and so are all of his family.
The lifestyle Adelaide provides with having the most beautiful beaches at your feet and the city only 15-minutes away and once you engross yourself in the social side of it and find your footing, Adelaide isn’t as quiet as people are led to believe. I am happy here and home should be a happy place.
Tell us about some of your interests outside of the Adelaide Thunderbirds? How do you find balancing the different areas of your life?
Rodan + Fields is a skincare product I have used myself for three years. When the opportunity was presented to me to be able to have my own business whilst selling something I truly believed in, I jumped at it. Some months are great and others quiet, which I know is partly my own doing with all my attention being netball sometimes. I am still finding a way to maintain a steady growth and income. I am loving all the learning platforms that are provided to me to be able to find my own way to make this successful.
I have also been given an amazing opportunity to be the Garville Premier League Midcourt Specialist Coach, which I’m also doing at a private school in Adelaide. Coaching is something I truly enjoy and would love to eventually do at an elite level.
I am at the stage of my career where I need to start stepping out of my comfort zone and working out what makes me want to get up in the morning, because I know being an athlete is not forever.
