The Adelaide Thunderbirds have locked in their 2021 leadership group with South Australian product Hannah Petty at the helm once again.
Petty will remain as captain this season and will be supported by fellow South Australian Maisie Nankivell and experienced South African international Shadine van der Merwe.
Head coach Tania Obst said all three athletes brought different and complementary leadership styles to the group.
“Hannah is one of the most selfless leaders I’ve worked with, maybe too selfless at times, but it’s a quality that will drive this team to higher standards,” Obst said.
“Maisie’s meticulous approach to her preparation for training and play has come through strongly and is really admired among the group.
“Shadine being chosen by her peers despite only having been here in Adelaide for the past couple of weeks is a reflection of her amazing ability to connect with her teammates, even from the other side of the world.”
Petty said she was incredibly honoured to be named captain of such a “special group”.
“Looking up at the names on the wall of the players that have led this club in the past, it’s pretty scary to be up there with some of those names but it’s a real honour,” Petty said.
“This group can all bring something different so bring on 2021 because they don’t know what’s going to hit them.
“We’re a genuine group who’s building towards something special.”
The Thunderbirds will kick off their 2021 season campaign on Sunday, May 2 when they host the Giants at Netball SA Stadium.
